Today you may explore the LEARN GENETICS site if your PowerPoint is done and saved in my presentation folder.  Be ready to give your speech Monday... write a script (I'd prefer a full script expanded CEAL for the turn it in to me one... but note cards in addition to script for the speech are a great idea).  Exciting!  For those of you who were absent and are doing some PowerPoint work this weekend remember to get the final product either emailed to me by Monday morning or dropped into my folder by Monday morning for presentations.  Instructions for the PowerPoint and speech extended CEAL are right HERE.

Conference sheets are due today... IF you didn't get it done DO THIS FOR THE WEEKEND!!!

Today was a very productive day of work for our presentation slide shows (the digital poster) and even begin some of our speech work.

Tomorrow is the last day in the writing center to work in class on this project.  This weekend you will finish writing your expanded CEAL if not already done during ELA &/or science on Friday.  You will prepare your "script" for the presentations.

We begin presentations on Monday in regular science room 211!  I am excited for this project!

Conference sheets are due tomorrow... did you get yours signed and ready to turn in?  DO IT NOW!!!

The research continues...

Today we continued with our genetic disease research.  Some of us even began our PowerPoint in class today.  Tonight you need to finish any missing research (try www.genome.gov as another resource).  Be ready to begin your PowerPoint tomorrow to support your speech.  The script for your speech will follow an expanded CEAL format.  The evidence should be included in the digital poster slides.  The analysis is what you add to the speech as you share with the class.  I expect a written or typed page of your script.

CLAIM (the topic sentence) Name your genetic disorder and preview the rest of the paragraph.

EVIDENCE and ANALYSIS:  Respond to all of the following in sentences as evidence and analysis of your information.
    1.    Evidence:  Explain mode of inheritance: what genes or chromosomes are involved?  Is it recessive or             dominant?
Analysis:  Why is the mode of inheritance important?  Why is it important to know if recessive,                     dominant, etc.? IF a gene disorder, explain what protein the gene SHOULD make and how it is affected             now.
    2.    Evidence:  Provide clinical description and/or symptoms of the disorder.
Analysis:  Discuss effect on the patient’s body, life style, and expectations for the future, life                            expectancy, etc.  Expand on the discussion from the bulleted slideshow.
    3.    Evidence:  Explain treatments and the management of the disorder.
Analysis:  Discuss side effects and success rate of treatment.  Include any support groups for the                 disorder.  Many disorders can’t be eliminated so what might a person’s life be like with this disorder?

LEAVING THOUGHT (conclusion) Closing statement, summarizing what you have learned about the genetic disorder.

We will continue to meet in the writing center Thursday and Friday to complete the work.  Conference sheets are due on FRIDAY so make a date with your folks and show off your great work!

Genetic disorders research begins...

Today we began research on our GENETIC DISORDERS PROJECT.  Tonight you are welcome to research or you can wait until tomorrow... no worries.  We still have lots of time!

IF you were absent yesterday you will want to print THIS PAGE and email me to find out what disorder to research.  If you were absent today you should get some research done since you missed today.  I think GENETICS HOME REFERENCE is the best site for a start on research.

Tomorrow we continue in the lab with research.  I shall share my research slideshow and speech as example of what your final project will be.

Conference sheets are due this Friday!  Be sure to show off your awesome work!

Today we discussed genetic disorders (pages 117-121 of our textbook) and selected the disorder we will research starting tomorrow.  We also reminded ourselves just how far we have come in learning of genetics and watched THIS TED-Ed ABOUT THE TWISTING TALE OF DNA.  Tonight would be a great night for your conference sheet work.  Bring your notebook home and show off all the amazing learning you've done! (conference sheet is due this Friday, February 27th... not 28th as printed on the page... oops!)

The genetics questions continue...

2/20/2015

Today we completed our SWYK addressing the following questions:

1.  Which of the following scientists contributed most to the study of genetics?  Explain what they contributed     and why their contribution is BEST  (contrast with another scientist's discovery in your analysis).
                James Watson and Francis Crick
                Rosalind Franklin
                Walter Sutton
                Reginald Punnett
                Gregor Mendel

2.  How has the decoding of the human genome changed our understanding of life and living things?  What         do you think may change in the future from our understanding of genetics?  Use specific vocabulary from      our unit in your analysis.

THIS WEEKEND:   Take the time to share your notebook with your parents and complete your Conference Sheet with genetics questions!  This is due next Friday... but parents sometimes have more time on weekends to complete this task.  Take the time to share your learning and have some discussions about genetics.

Epigenetics...

2/19/2015

Epigenetics:  what is it?  READ THIS or watch THIS VIDEO.  In the discussion of nature vs. nurture we can add one more factor that influences the outcome of our genetic expression of traits.  This adds another level to what Mendel described with his dominant and recessive pea traits!  Very interesting indeed!  Gives more credo to you are what you eat (and drink and smoke and do)... your environment influences.  The future of genetics is always changing as we learn more and more about our DNA.  Tomorrow you will give me insight into what you have learned about genetics with our Big SWYK (see below)!  Next week we research genetic disorders.

Good thing it's always just a flip of the coin which genes pass along.  Today we did just that: flipped coins to draw our child.  Truth is that you may not really have the alleles for the traits we flipped for today (all of us were heterozygous today for traits) but we did demonstrate that there may be a great variety of flips to make all of us!  IF you were absent and you want to do the lab you can READ THIS and then RECORD ON THIS

Tonight you need to finish the notes on Advances in Genetics... p. 123-128 in textbook, you choose
note style in notebook page 100+ (if needed take more pages).  Tomorrow I will check the notes!

It's in my genes... or is it?

Today we discussed the age old question of "nature vs. nurture" in understanding human genetics (page 116 in our textbook).  Are we who we are due to our genes OR are there environmental influences to change our traits?

We began this discussion looking at twin studies (you can read more IN THIS ARTICLE about twins) as well as watching THIS TED-ED ABOUT GENDER.  For some traits we can influence our genes but sometimes we can't.  This week we will discuss more about nature vs. nurture.
Tonight's homework is to read about Advances in Genetics... pages 123-128 in your textbook.  You may choose note style (notebook page 100+)... I will check your notes on Thursday as we prepare for the final SWYK on Friday... Tomorrow we flip coins to determine the traits of our children!  Oh my!!!
