Today we had our final classroom days to work on our argumentative paper.  Due date officially by 11:59 pm Monday, May 2nd.  Be sure to put in the work needed for revision... check for plagiarism... have an adult or two look it over for simple punctuation and capitalization since you are all text savvy but punctuationally challenged (LOL).  This paper needs to be BEST WORK (not just good enough work)... It's April, you are awesome and skilled, and you have the opportunity to really have an amazing argumentative paper if you put in the effort!  LAPS CURRENT EVENT FROM LAST FRIDAY'S CLASS is still missing for too many of you!  Do it!

Today we had an opportunity to explore science in the news.  For those of you who missed class today (absent kiddos should click here for the LAPS steps) you may choose from the online Science World featured articles (click this link and then sign in as a student using the password kmsscience211).  May you would rather read about gene editing of HIV or maybe read about how scientists are using tissues to 3D print organs.  You may even choose to read about how our very own DNA actually contains other organism's DNA!!!  IF you use an article that YOU found (instead of ones I provided) you WILL need to cite the source properly.

REMEMBER TO ATTEND FVCC's BIOBLITZ TOMORROW FOR AN AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO DO SCIENCE!!!

Fighting Disease!

4/20/2016

Today we explored the ways to catch, treat, and prevent infectious disease (germ warfare!).  IF you missed class you can read pages 60-65 about Viruses, Bacteria, and Your Health and take some notes (page 123 of notebook is where we did our notes) on How infectious diseases Spread, How we treat bacterial and viral disease, and How to prevent diseases.  We discussed some Do's and Don't's in fighting disease!  Tonight you should review and prepare for tomorrow's SWYK.  Watch THIS VIDEO FOR THE A TO Z OF DISEASES.  You can also watch THIS VIDEO WHICH DISCUSSES ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE.  You could also watch THIS VIDEO WHICH DISCUSSES THE BASICS OF GERMS.  You do get to use your notes for the SWYK (but if you don't have information in your notes you may find them unhelpful).  We shall also play Plague, Inc. tomorrow and explore world domination by means of pathogens!  Bring your own device if you own the app!

Plague, Inc. is a paid app BUT you may want to buy it anyway for your device!  Apple device  Android device

Today we finished the video UNDERSTANDING BACTERIA and wrapped up our notes/questions: What are bacteria?  What is the structure of a bacterial cell?  How do prokaryotes differ from eukaryotes?  How are archaebacteria different than eubacteria?  How do bacteria reproduce?  What is an endospore?  What is an antibiotic?  How do bacteria HELP us?  HARM us?  Tomorrow we shall explore how to prevent, fight, and avoid germs!  Tonight you need to wrap up any bacteria work not done!

Today we continued understanding the germs that make us sick.  We are now exploring bacteria!  Once again we have some questions to explore/answer about bacteria:  What are bacteria?  What is the structure of a bacterial cell?  How do prokaryotes differ from eukaryotes?  How are archaebacteria different than eubacteria?  How do bacteria reproduce?  What is an endospore?  What is an antibiotic?  How do bacteria HELP us?  HARM us?  (textbook page 27 and pages 48-57 are helpful to find the information; so is the VIDEO UNDERSTANDING BACTERIA VIDEO we started today).  Tomorrow we shall finish the video and discuss the answers to the questions.

Will you join in the BIO BLITZ this Saturday?  Check it out!!!

Today we wrapped up our virus notes/questions AND made sure we added Jenner and Salk to our Giants of Science (review yesterday's post if you don't remember who they are!).  We explored more on vaccines and also discussed a bit about Zika virus (if you need/want more information CLICK THIS).  Monday we explore more about germs as we learn (and answer new questions) about bacteria!  Be sure your virus work is done!
