What's your bag?

Today we shared characteristics about ourselves since we are about to discuss the characteristics of living things.  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you need to check Google Classroom for your replacement lesson (it's a Flipgrid sharing thing).  IF you know you will be back to school tomorrow (Friday) you can just bring a bag with 5 things about you to share with us OR you can do the Flipgrid video for me today!

Show What You Know about how scientists "science"

9/29/2021

Today we took our unit SWYK (some call it a test; I call it a Show What You Know).  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY I have assigned your SWYK in Google Classroom during your class period today.  Finish this assessment by tomorrow morning (if possible) and email me or comment in the assignment if you need support.

Tonight you need to place 5 items in a bag to share with us tomorrow.  The items should represent characteristics/traits about YOU!  I shared that I'm a mom of two amazing sons and dog (showed a diaper and my dog mom socks on), I love yoga/hiking/kayaking/being active (I showed a bendy kayak joe figurine), I am from Michigan and LOVE Michigan sports (had a Michigan pennant), I have family all across the country (I showed a map), and I am very smiling until I am very much NOT smiling (I had an emoji smiler ring and then flipped it upside down to frowning).  IF YOU KNOW YOU WILL MISS CLASS TOMORROW look in Classroom for YOUR replacement task (I will assign to you during your class period TOMORROW) otherwise put together a bag of items to share with us in class tomorrow!

Friday we will wrap up the fish investigation AND explore "What is Life?"

Back to the reality of school for me!!!

9/28/2021

I had a most WONDERFUL time in Boston and Cape Cod celebrating my nephew's wedding.  NOW it's time to fix all those crazy glitches in the Dealing with DATA lesson!  1) I have adjusted the due date of the "Dealing with DATA" lesson for tomorrow morning 8 am and 2) we spent today's class period discussing the past week or two's work and to just finish what you can.  Friday is NOW our new fish investigation conclusion day and tomorrow will still be your chance to Show What You Know about the science and engineering practices we've studied.  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY spend whatever time you can getting as much of the tasks finished up.  IF you are absent tomorrow I will be adding your SWYK to Google Classroom.

Today we spent class period finishing our "Dealing with DATA" task.  We ALSO had a check in question to answer.  Both tasks are found in Google Classroom.  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY just login to google and spend some time working on the assignment.

I will be back to school tomorrow!!!  We will share our EX's and O's for our Fortune Telling Fish on FRIDAY (for those who missed class last Wednesday or didn't yet have that signed safety contract it is your chance to get some data about the fish).  We will also review what you NOW know about "What is Science?"  Wednesday we have our first SWYK!

Graphing

9/23/2021

Today we discussed how to show data in a picture form (AKA how to graph data).  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can copy the notes into your notebook page 7 OR wait until next Tuesday when I am back in class to give you a print copy of the notes.  Please watch the video below (it's a good one to show scientific method AND graphing data).

Reminder that I will be gone tomorrow and Monday.  You will sit with 6:00 partners.  Be sure to bring earbuds for Chromebook work.  Email me if you have any questions and I'll be sure to respond.

We applied the scientific method today

HAPPY AUTUMNAL EQUINOX!!!  🍃🍂🍁🌤️ What an extra special day for those of us Team Equinox people.  Take a moment to look for all the signs of fall in your yard/neighborhood.  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you missed our investigation with "fortune telling" fish using another way to follow the wheel.  That's okay... you can get one next week when I am back to school and gather your own data.  For now, make sure you check out the animated science video below explaining how the scientific method works.  (THE SUB WILL NOT BE HANDING OUT ANY MATERIALS FOR TODAY'S MISSED LAB EVEN IF YOU ASK)

Reminder that you will be sitting with your 6:00 partners tomorrow (Thursday), Friday, AND Monday while I am gone.  I will still have THIS blog up to date each day summarizing daily work so you can keep up if you miss class.  As always, we can get you up to date once you return if you are not able to access Google Classroom or your notebook.  (next Tuesday will be a catch up and get ready to Show What You Know about "What is Science?" day PLUS revisit our fish investigation)

Variables check

9/21/2021

Today we explored how to do good science-ing.  We made sure our Wheel notes were finished and we added a few Giants of Science to our GOSATOT.  We discussed variables, questions, and hypotheses and used example experiments to identify independent, dependent, and controlled variables.  We added notes on variables to our "What is Science?" notes work on pages 1-4.

IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY do not worry about the GOSATOT or new vocabulary terms at this time IF you don't have your notebook at home with you.  We can get that up to date when you return to school.  For now make sure you watch the video below (&/or CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO TO BETTER EXPLAIN VARIABLES)

Sadly my Flocabulary subscription has now expired so you can't login with google as before.  CHECK THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM for steps to take as you tackle your "What is Science?" notes work.

Today we explored the steps of science.  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can get a copy of the wheel for your notebook when you return (we will attach to page 5).  Tomorrow we will discuss variables.  You have one more night to get that safety contract signed before you miss out on Wednesday's lab.  Please let me know if you have any questions!

We are getting a better picture of "What is Science?"

9/17/2021

Today we spent time on our "What is Science?" notes (check Google Classroom).  We also turned in our signed safety contracts (due Monday) and finished the Equinox Syllabus Survey (due today).  IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY I have the "What is Science?" notes choice board updated since we have no BrainPOP; use the Edpuzzle task instead.  Add notes in your notebook (or loose leaf if no notebook at home).  You may roll onto the backside of 1 (that's page 2) and even use pages 3 and 4 if you have a lot to say!  Next week we shall explore steps of the scientific method AND how scientists deal with data.  HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
