Today we checked our notes for the roles of fungi in the world and added Alexander Fleming to our Giants of Science for his discovery of penicillin. We then discussed all the important symbiotic relationships fungi have with others (some are good relationships like lichen and mycorrhizae; some are bad like athlete's foot and the parasitic Cordyceps). Track stars missed a good video today about these parasites: WATCH THIS. You also can watch the video below to discuss more of how fungi are very important to us! See below for SWYK. SWYK paragraphs due Monday if not already done in class. Answer the following using a fully supported CEAL:
Of all the roles fungi serve in nature, which of these roles (which niche) would you say is the most important? Use your CEAL paragraph skills to explain what role is most important, supporting evidence for this opinion, analysis of how this role is more important than another role (or two), and final linking statement to make this paragraph POP! Answer this SWYK question on loose leaf paper. IF your paragraph is not done when entering class Monday I expect you to stay at lunch (periods 1 & 3) OR after school (periods 4, 5, or 6) to finish!

Today we had a chance to dissect a button mushroom (Agaracus bisporis) and start our notes on The Roles of Fungi in Nature (pages 92-95 of the textbook... you choose style... put in notebook after the Fungi Facts note page). We shall check your notes tomorrow, discuss symbiosis, and take a quick SWYK on the Fungi! Today we attempted the SBAC testing, though did not successfully finish. We will likely do the "retest" next Tuesday or Wednesday... stay tuned! Periods 4, 5, and 6 learned about the fungus among us today. If you missed class you can get the notes from a classmate or myself when you return. Tomorrow we shall dissect mushrooms and discuss the roles fungi play in nature in more detail. A fungus is the largest organism! Fungal hyphae make their own "internet connections" READ THIS AND FIND OUT MORE...
Today periods 1 and 3 began our discussion of the fungus among us... tomorrow we shall do the same for periods 4, 5, and 6. IF you were absent today you can get the notes from anyone (or myself) when you return. We continue with SBAC testing tomorrow and then we get Wednesday and Thursday for FUNGI!!! Fungal hyphae make their own "internet connections" READ THIS AND FIND OUT MORE...
Today we discussed the good (foods), the bad (diseases), and the ugly (red tides and algae blooms) of the Protist Kingdom. Keep an eye out for protists in your foods (carageenan)... be careful when drinking unfiltered water if camping and hiking (giardiasis!), and don't swim during a red tide or eat shellfish (poison!)... Those of you who have absent or missing work have work this weekend. All of us will have FUN with fungi next week!
Today we had the opportunity to observe animal-like, plant-like, and fungus-like protists! Very fun! Below are a few videos of amoebas, volvox, and a very cool slime mold time lapse! Tomorrow more with our Venns. Today we wrapped up our discussion of bacteria and bacterial resistance. Some of you need to finish yesterday's homework (pages 66-67 answer #1 and #2 in your notebook on page 129). I will check tomorrow for those who were not ready today. We also got a glimpse into the world of PROTISTS!!! This algae nerd is so excited to share the wonder of pond life with you. Tomorrow we will look at animal-like, plant-like AND fungus-like protists. You may choose to work on your Venn diagram tonight. Page 130 in your notebook and the content is found in the text pages 74-83. We will have some time tomorrow in one rotation of the observations. We got a new Science World today with a great article of bacteria affecting fruits and period 1 got a sneak peek... we will use this article in more depth and detail at a later time when we are discussing plants and genetic modification. Stay tuned! WE don't love it when they share antibiotic resistance though! Tonight you need to answer questions 1 and 2 from page 67 (discussing antibiotic resistance) in your notebook page 129. IF you want the "4" you will do #3 in addition to 1 and 2 (do the poster on a blank paper)!
IF you have been absent both Monday and Tuesday: you will need to take notes on Bacteria from the text pages 48-57... your choice on style... use loose leaf paper for these notes and turn in upon your return. Today we discussed the similarities and differences of Archaea and Bacteria (page 27 in textbook... create a venn diagram on page 128 of your notebook). We also began watching "Understanding Bacteria" and will finish tomorrow. We will also discuss the good, bad, and ugly of these bacterial kingdoms. So many bacteria!
For those of you who missed school before Spring Break you will look here for the details on the LAPS due. |
