Today we took a quick SWYK about genetics and then began to learn about Charles Darwin and his theories of diversity in organisms. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to makeup the SWYK when you are next in class AND begin your work on Darwin's Theory. We do have a study hall tomorrow morning... come on in!

Today we reviewed inheritance (and planned who will finish Peggy and Bruce models) and the future of genetics. The past seems so easy with Punnett Squares and Mendel's peas. The future is pretty crazy with genetic engineering and CRISPR. Tomorrow we quickly SWYK on genetics and then explore change over time and meet Charles Darwin. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can review the videos below and practice PUNNETT SQUARES. SWYK tomorrow.
The afternoon group finished with SBAC testing; the morning group wrapped up work with our Peggy and Bruce model of inheritance. We also explored pedigrees, twins, and how epigenetics affect gene expression. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to makeup your SBAC (if you missed testing) and your group likely finished the poster without you. Tomorrow we will explore some pretty awesome genetic discoveries as we wrap up inheritance. Did you watch the VIDEO FROM FRIDAY YET? Be sure you do! How awesome to now know what a black hole looks like. Still more awesome was the collaboration needed to achieve this task. Most awesome is the graduate researcher is a University of Michigan alumnus (just like me). Watch Katie Bouman's Ted Talk (she is now DR. Katie Bouman). This is pretty cool!
Today we took a break from our inheritance models and watched an awesome video about mutations. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you are expected to watch this video by Monday... pop some popcorn and settle in! It's worth the watch! Monday we will wrap up your posters for the morning classes and SBAC again in the afternoon. Some of us completed the first testing day for SBAC; some of us wrapped up work with our Peggy and Bruce model of inheritance. We also explored about pedigrees, twins, and how epigenetics affect gene expression. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to makeup your SBAC (if you missed testing) but nothing to worry about from science. Tomorrow we have an easy day because of track missing school and SBAC draining the brain today. YOU CAN WATCH THE FRIDAY VIDEO NOW if you know you will be missing tomorrow's class! Cool ... working ahead of the game ...
Today we continued with phenotypes for the genotypes we flipped for yesterday in the Peggy and Bruce lab. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will join the group progress (either tomorrow or on Monday... depending on SBAC schedule). Friday we will not work on the model so track folks don't miss out! Some of you may still need to complete revision work on your superpower science... PERSEVERE and get it done!
Today we began our Peggy and Bruce model. We are using all we have learned about inheritance patterns as we discover our kiddo's genes. Tomorrow we will discover the phenotype of today's genotypes and continue with this lab. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY we have a detention tomorrow afternoon for missing conference sheets and superpower science papers. You may choose to join us to work on revisions or making up missing Punnett squares work. PowerSchool is not up to date with work turned in today... sorry.
Today we updated our notebooks and reviewed genetics. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can watch this interesting video below about how sex is determined in different species! We also discussed some genetic disorders that occur with too many chromosomes, too few of chromosomes, or mutations. Tomorrow we will apply more with the principles of inheritance. Remember to finish CONFERENCE SHEETS to avoid detention Wednesday (same with revisions/completion of the Superpower Science work AND any missing Punnett square SWYKs. Today we explored YET ANOTHER AWESOME SITE to learn all about genetics. Some of us decided to stay with Nova Labs and finish our missions. Some of us decided to use class time to finally finish the Superpower Science paper. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY be sure to spend some exploration time (login to Google Classroom and check the announcements this week). Monday we are back in the regular classroom ready to revisit inheritance, Punnett Squares, and traits.
Who will win? Bengal Tiger OR WarGoose? Tonight is the final battle for March Mammal Madness 2019. I wonder who will reign supreme mammal of this year's bracket?!?! IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY we logged in to Nova Labs Evolution and completed as many missions as class time allowed (battle posters were due at 8 am). You are welcome to login tonight and play OR you can tomorrow in class. We will add one more site to explore tomorrow (Learn Genetics... it is COOL). |
