The spin of the wheel gives us evidence... HERE IS A GOOD INFOGRAPHIC ABOUT WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING IN SCIENCE! Fantastic reminder of how we draw conclusions and how new information allows us to adjust our thinking. Right now we can conclude tape is better for affixing work into our notebooks, but there are still gluers in the mix. I now wonder if glue sticks work just as well. Sounds like a new experiment! Next week we shall discuss classification of living things. We sure have adjusted our way of thinking about classification over the years! We have new textbooks now, and new clocks, and new passes and a new unit to embark upon! Be sure to have all critters done by Monday (they already should be done and in by TODAY!). Remember the Learn Genetics website is awesome... THIS LINK is for the work with variation over time.

Today we had an opportunity to get feedback for our critters. Make any changes (or additions) so you will have your BEST first score in the new trimester ready to turn in tomorrow with new passes, clocks, and texts!
Today we continued work with our critters. This evolved bird must live in Switzerland!. Tonight you will finish your outline and drawing of your critter. Tomorrow we share AND do a quick SWYK of Darwin's vocabulary.
Today we continued our exploration of natural selection and adaptations. Your task is to "create a critter" to share on Thursday. You will need to design a new bird (remember in this day and age we can genetically engineer from any organism's genes) and draw what the bird looks like. Did you leave your Create a Critter instruction outline behind? HERE is another copy for you! IF you want to build a model do it! But all that is required is a labeled drawing with the outline of information for your new species. Work day tomorrow. So many adaptations for sight!
Today we discussed factors that influence changing species via natural selection and evolution. Tonight you need to wrap up your vocabulary work... tomorrow we discuss adaptations and will be designing our own new species! Notebooks will be collected for periods 1 and 3 (4 and 5 is Wednesday and 6 is Thursday). End of trimester 2 is this week so any missing work from the past few months is DUE NOW or NEVER! Get it done! If you missed class today watch the video and trace your own hand on page 112 of your notebook. Fill in
the facts as to the 5 factors that influence evolution. Also, be sure your vocabulary from last week is done! Today we started to model natural selection with mice. We will wrap up the lab on Monday... no need to do any calculations this weekend. You do however need to finish your vocabulary! Continue work on the vocabulary terms of species, fossils, adaptation, evolution, and natural selection. You will set up your notebook similarly to how you do the vocabulary 3-column in social studies HOWEVER we will add an illustration of the concept of the term along with analysis as to how does the term relates to Darwin's work. Page 108 will have the terms species and fossils; page 109 will be for adaptation and evolution; and page 110 is for natural selection. You can illustrate the concepts of the term with your own illustrations OR feel free to cut out from magazines or printed pictures if you'd rather.
Trimester ends next week. I will take any missing work on Monday and then after that only if you ask nicely! I will grab notebooks from you next week for a trimester notebook check. All vocabulary will be assessed then. Today we began our understanding of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. We read from the textbook pages 138-145 and watched a video about his voyage to the Galapagos Islands. Tonight you will continue work on the vocabulary terms of species, fossils, adaptation, evolution, and natural selection. I'd love for you to finish this tonight!!! Tomorrow we shall demonstrate how the environment selects for certain characteristics in natural selection. Still have conference sheets missing! UGH!!! Yesterday we continued with our presentations and today we wrap them up. IF you were absent and did not get to present you WILL present when you return so be ready! We still have conference sheets that aren't done! AAAAAAAAAK! Tomorrow we shall embark on the SMS Beagle and meet Mr. Charles Darwin! Today we began sharing the information about our genetic disorders. We had some great speeches (and a few who even did a good job despite lack of script). Tonight you all need to get ready to go! If you still need the directions CLICK RIGHT HERE and then be prepared to present. For those of you who didn't get the PowerPoint dropped into my folder: you will need to get to the library/writing center before school, at HomeBase, lunch or some other time to do this task. Nope you can't go in class tomorrow to do it... had time last week (yep...mean and evil). Absent folks: Keep working and please email me with any questions! [email protected] Did you remember to complete your conference sheet? It's late now! Still worth doing though. |
