Today we corrected our worksheet about Mendel's work (and attached on page 88 of the notebook), added Mendel to our Giants of Science timeline, AND added even more terms used by geneticists to describe alleles (page 88 of the textbook): phenotype, genotype, homozygous, and heterozygous. We didn't get to discuss codominance but ADD TO YOUR GLOSSARY IF YOU WERE ABSENT AND YOU WILL BE AHEAD OF THE GAME! Tomorrow we explore phenotypes of human traits... BINGO!!! Get your vocab in the glossary! Vocab terms from this section include: heredity, trait, genetics, fertilization, purebred, alleles, dominant, recessive, hybrid AND selective breeding, hybridization, and inbreeding also included with Mendel's Work!!! Remember we already have DNA, RNA, chromosome, gene, genome, and mutation defined from last unit!
Today we continued with our notes (worksheet) for Mendel's Work AND added the vocabulary terms from this section to our glossary. Tomorrow we will check the worksheet and have great discussion of Mendel's work!
Today we reviewed CHROMOSOMES AND GENES (if absent print notes... put in page 87 of notebook). We also began our work with Mendel (IF ABSENT EITHER PRINT AND BEGIN or come get sheet upon return). Tomorrow more work time with lots of Mendel music!!! Video below explains more of Mendel and his peas. Get into the Mendel mood and preview next week's work!!!
Today we visited with Bill Nye the Science Guy to get an overview of genetics and heredity. We also updated our glossary with the terms GENE and GENOME. Tomorrow we will discover the history of inheritance and start on the word wall... many new terms for genetics and heredity for sure!!! Indian Why Stories are due! Video above is another explanation for genes, DNA, and inheritance (also a cautionary tale on makeup tips)...
