Today we extracted the DNA from strawberries. Pretty cool to see DNA! We also finished our DNA models (not as cool but colorful and helpful). Tomorrow we learn to read DNA. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you missed the lab. Maybe TRY IT AT HOME? Otherwise just be ready for me to take your notebook tomorrow (table of contents up to date? vocab? how about the gummy bear conclusion?). Today we created a model of DNA. Some of us have just a bit to finish tomorrow. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to come in after school to make up the model work (too much work for just a study hall or lunch... although a few days in a row might work). Tomorrow we get to touch actual DNA!
Today we began our work with DNA. Tomorrow we will build our own DNA model. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can PRINT OR COPY THESE NOTES for page 74 in the notebook. Watch the video below all about DNA (you can also check out THIS SITE OF COOL DNA INFORMATION). Today we reviewed all processes, molecules, and organelles that we have learned since we began exploring the cell theory. On to the nucleus next with DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis! IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY just make sure you are all caught up with your gummy conclusion, your vocabulary, and any past work! Tomorrow we explore DNA! Today we checked on our gummies and the eggs to see if we could reverse the movement of water just by letting osmosis do it's thing (and yes we did!). We also took a SWYK on the movement of molecules. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to take the SWYK upon return (HomeBase study hall, lunch, or after school) and add selectively permeable, diffusion, osmosis, passive transport, and active transport to your glossary (word, definition, example &/or picture AND connection to the big concept of cell theory). Today we collected data on how the gummy bears reacted soaking in water overnight. We calculated the percent change and wrote a conclusion (BTW all the gummies swelled up!). Explain what happened to your gummy bear while it sat overnight in the water. Use the terms diffusion and osmosis in your explanation. (write this supported CEAL on page 71) C = the question E = actual evidence (data) A = explain what happened to the gummy using the science of diffusion (moving from high to low concentration)and osmosis (diffusion of water) in your explanation L = restate the question IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you will need to get the data when you return tomorrow and write up your conclusion. We also have a SWYK on moving materials into and out of cells. Review the videos below!
Today we explored diffusion and osmosis. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you may want to print THESE NOTES for your notebook (page 68). We also started a lab to explore osmosis. tomorrow we will gather the data and conclude. Today we used an app on the ipad to help explore the structure of the cell membrane. Tomorrow we will get into the nitty gritty details of diffusion and osmosis. Today was for exploration. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY you can watch the video below and be ready to learn tomorrow! Today we acted like a plant cell. Interesting to add chloroplasts to the mix: they took carbon dioxide and water and changed it into carbs and oxygen for the mitochondria to use. This week we explore just how materials move into and out of the cell. IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY be sure you have your calendar done from last week AND finish the dissection from before break. You don't need to worry about missing our activity today.
